April’s Close Knit

Saturday 25th April 2015
2-4pm, The Gallery of Costume, Platt Hall.
This month Close Knit is inspired by the Eastern Exchanges: East Asian Craft and Design exhibition which is taking place at Manchester Art Gallery. The exhibition invites us to ‘See the amazing history and future of East Asian craft and design and its global influence in this exhibition inspired by objects from Manchester Art Gallery’s collection. The show features over 1,500 years of the rich craft heritage of Japan, China and Korea: ceramics, metalwork, furniture, lacquer, textiles and sculpture, with exhibits ranging from magnificent court treasures, to masterpieces by contemporary makers.’
 As lovers of wool, we will be celebrating the incredible influence Japanese ‘Amigurumi’ techniques and design have had on contemporary crochet in recent times. This session will be a chance to brush up (or pick up!) basic crochet stitches and create kawaii (Japanese for cute), spring-themed, amigurumi character egg cosies. For the die-hard knitters there will be an opportunity to create amigurumi-style knitted cosies too. Hope you can join us!
Friendly adult sessions for beginners and experts. Needles and yarn are supplied but if you would prefer to bring your own materials:
those choosing to knit will be making sheep cosies using a mixture of aran or chunky yarn (as fluffy as you like) and DK, and 5mm and 3.5mm dpns;
crocheters will be making chicks or rabbits using DK yarn and 4mm and 3mm hooks.
